Living Room Interior Design

A living room fails for three reasons: the seating is arranged around the television instead of the room, the lighting is a single ceiling fitting, and every piece of furniture is the same height. All three are fixable.

Seating, focal point, circulation

We start by deciding what the room is actually for — conversation, film, reading, all three — and place the seating against that. A sofa off the longest wall often opens a room rather than shrinking it, and a chair angled into the corner does more work than a second sofa.

Then the focal point. A fireplace, a window with a real view, a wall of books. Televisions can be present without being the subject.

  • Seating composition and conversation distances
  • Focal point and sightline resolution
  • Rug sizing — the most common error we correct
  • Three-layer lighting scheme, all warm
  • Textile and material palette
  • Storage and media integration

Small living rooms

Lower furniture makes a low-ceilinged room taller. Legs visible under seating make a floor read larger. A rug that reaches under the front legs of every piece pulls a small room together, where an undersized rug floats and fragments it.
